Police and a south London council are calling for ID checks, a cashless payment system and a crack down on unlicensed scrap metal yards after bronze plaques were stolen from a memorial. The theft occurred in the area of Sutton and the war memorial is a smaller-scale version of the Cenotaph in Whitehall. The brazen thieves targeted the memorial in September, weeks before the Armistice Day commemorations which salute the Fallen.
