The ultimate fate of the the controversial bollards in Burton is to be decided in the near future, as a report into the safety of the posts has finally reached draft stage, according to a news report in the local media.
The bollard system was originally implemented in order to semi-pedestrianise the Market Place and some of High Street, but it has managed to create numerous disputes over time, mainly because motorists have continually been spiked by the rising posts, which lower to let buses through.
For this reason, the community seems split on the value of the bollards. Many people say they are nothing but trouble, but others say they welcome the restrictions, and that people who get caught out by the posts should simply have read the warning signs.
A spokesman for the local authority said: “We hope that whatever decision the county take on the future of the bollards will be in the interest of the community.
“The borough council operates the CCTV system which also covers the area the bollards are located. We are keen to meet with the county and finally agree their financial contribution towards this operation.
“This contribution is relevant whether or not the county decide to continue with the bollard or implement an alternative solution.”
