A local council has decided to restrict car access to one of the most iconic squares in the city, a move that will reduce traffic in the area by 70%.
Glasgow City Council has decided to prevent cars from travelling into George Square, with only buses, taxis and cyclists allowed access. In order to do so, they’ve decided to put in a bus gate at Nelson Mandela Place that will operate from 7am until 7pm, seven days a week. Council bosses hope that this will result in a drop in road congestion, a reduction in harmful exhaust emissions and a visible improvement in the environment for pedestrians.
All traffic will be banned from the east side of George Square, outside the City Chambers, and plans are in place to raise the existing road there to the same level as the square, a news report could reveal.
Bollards, which can be retracted to allow access for emergency vehicles or VIPs visiting the City Chambers, will be installed at each end of the street.
Car Park Barriers & Turnstiles offers a high-end, reliable, yet quite affordable access restriction solution of this type as well, our Automatic Bollards being specifically designed to limit vehicle access to a specific location, and then be lowered rapidly when passage is authorised, typically within 2-3 seconds.
Our bollards are constructed out of concrete, stainless steel, aluminium or cast iron and are sturdy enough to be able to completely stop the majority of vehicles. Furthermore, they’re also quite resilient to atmospheric elements, and are housed inside compartments set into the road surface.
Additionally, an access control device, such as a smart card, can be combined with the automatic bollards, enabling quick and easy raising and lowering of the post. The Car Park Barriers & Turnstiles automatic bollards also sport an anti-intrusion locking system, as well as a failsafe in both retracted and extended position.
