A Staffordshire day centre that’s regularly visited by older residents will enjoy a superior level of security after fencing was put up to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.
The Grocott Centre has secured £8,000 in grants and donations to install new palisade fencing around Heron Cross House. It comes after the Heron Cross hub was repeatedly targeted by vandals and thieves 18 months ago. The offenders were able to gain access easily by cutting the wire fencing that previously surrounded the centre.
The day centre offers services to elderly people with dementia and physical disabilities and is visited by around 40 people a day. The project was part-funded by a £3,000 grant from Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner’s People Power Fund. Stoke-on-Trent City Council also provided a grant.
Derek Capey, chairman of the Grocott Centre, said: "It’s brilliant that we received the funding because it means that we can sleep easier at night knowing that there is secure fencing around.
"It also saves police time as they don’t have to keep coming out so it’s a good form of prevention. People used to come in at night and take garden furniture and things like that. While we have been there, it’s happened around three times.
"Before we were there we know, from what the police and council told us, that a lot of people used to get in because it was boarded up at the time. It has been much better since we took it over."
