‘Hostile vehicle measures’ consisting of static and automatic barriers and bollards have been deployed across Cardiff in a bid to prevent terror attacks such as the ones from London, Berlin, Barcelona and Nice in which vehicles were used as weapons and driven at crowds of people.
Cardiff Council has confirmed in a report it has spent £1 million on the anti-terror measures in 2017/18, but said they were not installed to respond to a specific threat to people in the city, a news report in the local media can reveal.
A council spokesman said: “Although we are not responding to any specific threat, the safety of residents, and everybody who works in or visits Cardiff, is of the utmost importance.
“Therefore we have worked with our partners in the Welsh Government, South Wales Police and The Welsh Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit over the past 12 months to install a range of hostile vehicle mitigation measures, including static and automated barriers.
“These barriers have been positioned, based on the advice of partners, at strategic locations around the city centre where there are large crowds of people.
“These measures are reviewed on an ongoing basis and we will continue to listen closely to our partners in the future with regard to the introduction of more measures of this nature to ensure the safety of our city and citizens.”
